Comments: I came across this web site as I was doing some research on men and breast cancer. After losing my father ten years ago to cancer, I have been an advocate for educating and informing the public about the seriousness of cancer awareness. I think that this is an excellent cause and informative web site for all.

Comments: My 34 year old cousin is battling breast cancer for the second time and she is very high spirited about treatments and everything. Not much gets her down. It's hard to see her cope with the cancer but at the same time it's amazing to see how she's dealing with it.

I am in excellent health, with no signs of recurrence 15 years later. I am currently active with the local chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation promoting awareness of male breast cancer. I didn't know myself until I saw a TV show which had a character with MBC. I've since had a mastectomy and just finished four cycles of AC with only minor side effects. The notes from other patients here are very encouraging. Thanks for your website and keep spreading the word! from the chemo.

The University of Utah, department of Genetic Epidemiology is currently researching male breast cancer. In 1994, our department in collabooration with others isolated the BRCA1 gene and located the BRCA2 gene. In 1996, the BRCA2 gene was isolated. A large majority of families containing both male and female breast cancers are due to the breast cancer gene BRCA2. We are specifically looking at the relationship between male breast cancer and the BRCA2 gene. If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are male, we would like to invite you to participate in our study. We will ask you to provide a small blood sample, answer a questionnaire, answer questions about cancer history within your family, and sign a medical release form so we can obtain your medical records pertaining only to cancer. There will be no cost to you and we will provide the materials necessary for your participation. Your information will be kept completely confidential. If you would like to participate in our study or if you would like more information please contact Linda Steele by e-mail (linda@episun4.med.utah.edu) or by phone - toll-free at 1-877-893-GENE(4363) or (801) 587-9303.

In the last couple of months I received a letter from my union, the Health Employees Union of British Columbia saying that there seemed to be an unusually high instance of breast cancer in women at my workplace, an extended care facility, in Kamloops. The letter bothered me the way it was worded in that the letter made it sound like this was a womans problem. It's not!!! Men have breasts too so it's not a womans problem or a mans problem but a human problem. Doug McKee

Tomorrow(12/30/99) I am having surgery to remove a mass on my left breast. I don't know at this time if it cancer or not, but pray that it isn't. The information on your web page is the only knowledge I have found. I went to my family doctor with a lump and soreness in my left breast. He is a very compasionate man, (possibly parinoide due to losing a leg to a very rare bone cancer) told me that breast cancer in men was possible, and wanted me to see a surgeon. The surgeon also informed me of the same diagnosis and has allowed me to wait 6 weeks to see if would go away. It hasn't and tomorrow I am having surgery. Thank You for helping someone who already feels unconfortable, atleast know that there are others that understand, and can help.

This is a very refreshing site for the male perspective. I love the pink ribbon with the blue leg. It shows that there is someone else to look out for besides women. Nearly all literature I have come across addresses women throughout. SOme of the newer stuff has a little paragraph at the beginning that says "this applies to males too". The emotional issues covered deal with the male who has a female in his life who has breast cancer, not vice versa. Keep up the good work.

My father was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 1997, at the age of 73. My mother was the one who recognized the symptoms and pressured him to go to the doctor. At the first visit the doctor said that it was probably just a bruise. Several weeks later with the "bruise" still unhealed, my mom pressured Dad to go in again, and pressured the doctor to check it out more. The doctor reluctantly did a biopsy, which came back positive. Dad had a modified mastectomy, chemotherapy, and tamoxifen. He recently went off the tamoxifen because he didn't like the side effects. He was disappointed that there were no other men around who could or would talk to him about the side effects before he made his decision. By the way, one of my father's sisters died in her mid-30's of breast cancer. One of his first cousins also developed breast cancer in her mid-30's. My older sister was just diagnosed with a particularly aggressive tumor in her breast a few weeks ago. She had a lumpectomy 10 days ago, but one of her nodes was positive. She will be undergoing scans to see if this cancer has spread anywhere else. She needs to wait until the surgical wound has healed before starting her chemo. By the way, she does not have the usual type of tamoxifen-treatable breast cancer. With 2 "first-degree" relatives diagnosed with breast cancer, I know that I am at increased risk. I get annoyed when the sheet I fill out at the time of my mammogram asks only about "mother, sister, daughter" with breast cancer -- I write in FATHER! I signed up for a clinical trial for early detection of breast cancer. In their program to assess my risk, they counted my sister but not my father because "father was not one of the options in the program" -- and they wouldn't put it under "mother" as a proxy for "parent". How many times have we heard that breast cancer risk comes from the mother's side of the family -- not to worry about it's coming from the father's side? My genetics knowledge is rudimentary, but my father has only 1 X chromosome, and if I am a female, I have to have inherited that one. My mother had 2 to give me. If one of them carried a breast cancer gene, my chance would be only 50-50 to get it. Sorry to go on so, but I am so pleased that someone has taken it upon themselves to start educating people that *both* men and women can get breast cancer. I will be sending you a donation shortly.

Thanks to a story of Dave Lyons in the Eugene Registar Guard, I am now a breast cancer survivor. Two weeks before I read Dave's story in the paper, I had been to my Dr. for a check up, and had mentioned a sorness in my left breast. He checked it out, and could not find anything. So when I read Dave's story, I faxed it to my Dr. The next day he sent me in for a mamagram, then ultra sound. The Radiologist noted that I probably had gynecomastia. A Surgery was scheduled for a biopsy. When the gynecomastia was removed, in that mass was a cancer the size of a pea. I then had a modified radical mastectomy on Oct. 29, 99. My nodes were negative. Thanks Dave for your going public in Portland. I will come to the next support meeting to meet you. Dick

My husband, at age 82, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of January, 1999. We were given the very best treatment by his primary care doctor, the surgical oncologist, the second and third opinion oncologists, his medical oncologist, the chemotherapy center. All covered by our HMO with no quibbling or hesitation. Five months after the mastectomy, he developed a cough (before he had the last of the chemogherapy cycles). Three weeks later he died as a result of the cancer metastasizing into his lungs. Now my goal is to encourage all men to be aware that all lumps should be investigated promptly. We need to educate physicians and lay persons about this fierce attacker.

My father (56 yrs old) was diagnosed with breast cancer in June of 1998. He had a mastectomy and 6 months or chemotherapy, and now is deciding what the next step is. The doctors are recommending 5 years of Tamoxifen and 6 weeks of radiation. He is doing well and is definitely surviving, and we are believing that he will beat this thing. It is frustrating that 99.9% of the Web sites out there are for women, and I have a lot of questions about the drugs they want to give him. Thanks for being out here for people like me to read these stories of survivors.

Thanks for a great cause. I joined the Male Breast Cancer support group over 1 year ago when my father's breast cancer returned after 5 years of being cancer-free. His fight ended on August 31, 1998 at the age of 57 years. The group was there for me throughout and still is to this date. Bob's death hit hard as this was the second death from breast cancer that I was part of. I wish Canadians fought as hard as you Americans are, at finding a cure and letting the world know about male breast cancer. I am only one small person in a big world but I am trying to help out the best I can. Keep up the fight and one day we can make my father, Bob, and of course John Nick, and others like them proud of our accomplishments.

Thank you for your efforts to use this site to raise the awareness of men with breast cancer. I will reach the five year mark this March, having been diagnosed with MBC at age 46. My doctor immediately responded to my concern about a lump under my left breast, and the following days went by quickly: mammogram, lumpectomy, mastectomy with lymph node removal, bone scan. This was followed by 6 months of chemo (CMF), two years of Tamoxifen and three years of Arimidex. I've added a rigorous regimine of vitamins and strong exercise to my life. For the moment, I'm healthy!

I will begin work on it over the holidays and hopefully have it completed by January 4, '99. If any of you have a specific links that you think should be added to this Male Breast Cancer page, please email me. I think Nancy, Dave and Theresa and LaWanda, are all doing a wonderful job in getting the word out. I hope to be able to add my voice to theirs. I have been volunteering to help Nancy with the mailings of the Awareness for Male and Female Breast Cancer books and other information also enclosed, and let me tell you its alot of work for a person to do alone. That's what Nancy has been doing. This is a worthwild organization to donate to. Before I met Nancy, I did not know that Men can get breast cancer and also die from it just like women. This type of information needs to be known to everyone all over the world. I watch the Rosie O'Donald Show just about every day, and in the month of October they had Breast Cancer awareness month, not one mention of men. Nancy also wrote a letter to Rosie O'Donald and no response was ever received back. We all need to help Nancy in her fight to let everyone aware that Men also are susceptible to Breast Cancer before it happens in your family!!

The stories of breast cancer survivors are very useful. They let a man know he needs to be aggressive if he finds a lump despite protestations he may get from physicians. One item that would be nice (although I'm sure it is available elsewhere) would be instructions for palpating one's breast to look for lumps.

Hi, my name is La Wanda Hill and if you're looked thru this wonderful new site, you seen the link to my homepage. I hope you had time to visit there. You see, I'm the daughter of a breast cancer survivor. I tell a little bit about my daddy's story on my homepage. I'm VERY happy to say that we stood in line for a miracle when my daddy was diagnosed and we got one. My daddy, now 74, has been cancer free since his mastectomy just over two years ago. And, you know, I just about ran myself ragged trying to find a way to get the word out that men DO get breast cancer. The Pam Honsinger at Keepinthefaith lead me to the MBC mailing list and Bill Stafford. From there I met Nancy Nick of the Nick Foundation and many other wonderful friends. One of my friend on the MBC list just lost her father days ago to this terrible disease. Nancy Ord, we are still praying for you and your family.

So I'm here to shout MEN DO GET BREAST CANCER. And I'm here to thank B. Stafford for the MBC mailings, Nancy Nick for all her work, Pam Honsinger for leading me to the right people regarding this important issue, and to Dave and Teresa Lyons for setting up this site for the Nick Foundation. Just like a friend said to me recently....a friend I met at the MBC e-mail group, one step at a time and we'll be able to cover a lot of ground. Welcome to the group Cookie. You're about to make some life long friends.

Thanks again to everybody. God Bless you All!!

Hi, My husband Jerry was dignoies with male breast cancer just this Feb. His treatment consisted of 4 cycles of chemo then in July he has a modified radical mastectomy. This month he just completed his 1st of 4 more cycles of chemo. The oncologist calls them assurance measures. We feel very fortunate to have such a super cancer DR. It was and still is very scary because there wasn't any information to read up on this disease. It all pretained to women. My husband felt very uncomfortable saying he had breast cancer as no one seemed to have heard of it in males. Thanks to Nancy Nick's I will be able to put these wonder booklets that she has had made up in the North Puget Onocolgy. This will help people become aware that breast cancer is not just a female disease.  Bless you Nancy.

John Nick didn't have to die. It makes me very sad to read this, and yet very happy to know I had a knowledgeable GP who sent me immediately for a mammogram. We should all be so lucky. I've read and studied like crazy since my diagnosis at age 46. The results: the keys are early diagnosis, vitamins, exercise, and personal peace--- including the elimination of the sources of fear, guilt, and anger.
