My great aunt lost one of her breasts, and my aunt (all in the same side of the family) lost her life. I'm so interested in doing my part to keep myself up to date on breast cancer awareness and how to be more involved making other women and men aware. Name: Gayle A. Two weeks before I read Dave's story in the paper, I had been to my Dr. for a check up, and had mentioned a soreness in my left breast. He checked it out, and could not find anything. So when I read Dave's story, I faxed it to my Dr. The next day he sent me in for a mamagram, then ultra sound. The Radiologist noted that I probably had gynecomastia. A Surgery was scheduled for a biopsy. When the gynecomastia was removed, in that mass was a cancer the size of a pea. I then had a modified radical mastectomy on Oct. 29, 99. My nodes were negative. Thanks Dave for your going public in Portland. I will come to the next support meeting to meet you.

You see 99% of my class is men and I'm sure they are not aware that breast cancer can effect them. Thank you again for the wonderful information.

But the true stories here have touched me so much. Most of my friends were surprised when I told them I was doing an essay on breast cancer in men, because they did not know it existed, but thanks to organisations such as yourself, the word is being spread.

Date: Sunday, August 15, 1999 at 18: 37: 44 Comments: My husband, at age 82, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of January, 1999. We were given the very best treatment by his primary care doctor, the surgical oncologist, the second and third opinion oncologists, his medical oncologist, the chemotherapy center. All covered by our HMO with no quibbling or hesitation. Five months after the mastectomy, he developed a cough (before he had the last of the chemogherapy cycles). Three weeks later he died as a result of the cancer metastasizing into his lungs. Now my goal is to encourage all men to be aware that all lumps should be investigated promptly. We need to educate physicians and lay persons about this fierce attacker.
